Womens Football News Archive -30th May 2003 Jayne's Tops The Players Poll - AGAIN! 
Jayne Ludlow is widely regarded as the best player in the Premier League and this fact has been confirmed by her fellow players as she is the Player's Player of the Year for the second time in three seasons.
Although Arsenal were to end the season without a trophy, the all-action 24-year-old midfielder enjoyed a great campaign and scored 16 league goals. "It came as a total shock this time!" she revealed afterwards. "The first time I won the award I had an idea that it might happen as there were rumours flying around but I expected a Fulham player to get it really, I just want to thank everyone and wish I could do it personally. It's been the highlight of a very frustrating season." Third in the National Division, a Cup Final appearance and two semi finals would be a fantastic season for most clubs but by Arsenal's high standards this represents a disappointment, indeed this has been their first season without a trophy for 12 years and Jayne does not want this to happen again. "We've had injuries to key players this season but there are no excuses - we've underachieved, simple as that. We have not performed in the big games when it has really matters, some players have been resting on their laurels and they know it, and that is not good enough. We've played pretty, nice passing football but that doesn't always win you things. We've not been good enough, especially towards the end of the season, hopefully we can put that right." As the season drew to a close, rumours have gone around that Jayne would be switching clubs but the Welsh midfielder is quick to dispel them. "I will be staying at Arsenal and I'll be having meetings with Vic Akers and Faye White to discuss things during the summer. We need players all through the park in order to keep the girls on their toes - we've still got a good nucleus of players there but we just need to do better on bigger occasions. These are going to be interesting discussions and it could be a summer of change." | |||||||||||||
