Katy Little doesn't want to keep her goal target for the 2003/04 season a secret, in fact it's staring you right in the face every time you watch her pull on Bristol City's red and white shirt. The midfielder hopes to net eight goals during this campaign - her squad number for the season - and she's already halfway there. The final goal in a 4-2 thrashing of Enfield, a brace against Merthyr Tydfil and most recently one strike in the 4-3 victory over Wimbledon last weekend has left Katy with a tally of four in five league games so far this season. "Goalscoring is not something that I've been specifically working on in training," Katy confessed to Women's Soccer Scene. "But mentally I'm prepared to get forward a bit more now and Jack Edgar (City's manager) has been urging me to run at players. "At the moment I'm well on the way to my target for the season, eight goals, my squad number. If I can keep getting in positions to score and aiming for the far post with shots I hope I will get a few more." Katy's most notable goal of the season to date was her flicked effort against Merthyr just over a week ago, guiding the ball past the Welsh keeper with the outside of her foot from Angie Tinson's well-worked cross. "The goal wasn't bad," Katy said afterwards modestly. And it's that sort of confidence that has improved the midfielder's game so much already this season, something she puts down to her regular involvement with the club's Academy. Last season Katy was one of three girls - alongside Rachael Allen and Lizzie Barratt - to sign up for a season-long trial with the club's FA-licensed Academy. The trial was hugely successful, with the trio remaining on the Academy books this term - and being joined by a further sextet of Alex Eskenazi, Jade Bailey, Toni Hemmings, Charlotte King, Joanna How and Carly Symons. "In matches I'm taking one or two touches on the ball where other girls are taking five or six touches, so that just shows how much I have improved since joining the Academy," she added. "A lot of credit should go to John (Clayton, Academy Coach) who has been working with each one of us individually, identifying our weaknesses and making us stronger. "I'd be the first to admit that I was lacking in a bit of strength and speed last season, but John's been working on that - and on my crossing - and it's just beginning to show how it has improved my game now. The 17-year-old added: "I am more confident. I never used to shout on the pitch but I'm going home with a sore throat after matches now due to all the talking I do out there." Manager Jack Edgar has been full or praise of for his goalscoring midfielder's early season form, admitting recently: "She just looks so comfortable on the ball and joining the Academy has helped her game, there can be no doubts about that." "I've just challenged her to go at players a bit more because we know she's got the ability to create chances, for herself and team-mates, if she can do that. Her crossing has been excellent so far this season and she's already got four goals - so I'm very happy!" Bristol City go into Sunday's match with Ipswich Town in third place, five points behind leaders Southampton Saints with a game in hand. The Saints currently boast the Southern Premier Division's only 100 per cent record and Katy admits that they will be favourites in most people's eyes. "Southampton have come down from the top division and look strong," she said. "But we want to win the league - that's our only target this season." "Last season we made a number of mistakes that cost us but we'll be looking to cut those kind of errors out of our game this term. Southampton will be favourites and Ipswich - who finished above us last year - look good, but we've got a strong squad ourselves and we are capable of winning the division." | |||||||||||||||
