The recent announcements by Cardiff City to sponsor Merthyr Tydfil LFC and the Welsh FA initiatives have brought new hope to the women's game in Wales. Here is an off the cuff personal interview with Merthyr's Jenna Hopkins.
What do you think about the Cardiff City FC sponsorship ? "The sponsorship and the FAW football initiatives sound good, a much needed lift after the last couple of years when there have been many big let downs." How will the announcements help you personally ? "We all need real challenging play to stretch and develop abilities, last season I also played for Barclays Bank men’s team to help me develop my play, the new training opportunities will hopefully bring better challenges." How soon do you see this comming into effect ? "We have our first new training session in Cardiff's public Leckwith Stadium 8pm to 10pm on Friday 3rd October." How do you see the announcements helping your club ? "We have all contributed to our club finances and worked hard to achieve and hold our position in the FA Premier League, as the standards in the game are rising quickly, we all really do have to put a lot more effort in to succeed, the sponsorship will help us focus more on our game and worry less about our club funds." How do you see the club name change ? "As Cardiff City LFC is already the business name of an existing club, I gues we may be looking for a new name, we have always been nick named The Strikers, perhaps that or Cardiff Strikers would be the right name." As the record holder of the most international goals scored in a single match, how do you see the announcements affecting the Welsh international game ? "Great football comes through the entire team thinking as one with total commitment to fitness and selfless creative team play. It is important for top Welsh players to have the opportunity to work and play together full time to have any real chance in the national and international competitions, this may be the beginning of that." "Now that there is new hope, it will be interesting to see what is delivered over the next months." | |||||||||||||||
