John Jones has resigned as manager of Premier League side Barnet, after 23 years in charge of the club. With the Bees struggling at the foot of the table and only five games left to play this season, he took the decision to leave after many successful seasons. Barnet Match and Fixture Secretary John Taylor confirmed: "John has resigned and it's a pity he has made the decision, but it’s a decision we have to respect. "The players are shocked and John will certainly be missed - he's been the lifeblood of the club and his record in women's football is second to none." When Jones became manager, the club was known as District Line Ladies and played in the lower reaches of the Greater London League but under his stewardship they climbed through the League's divisions to eventually become a successful outfit in the F.A.Women's Premier League. After changing their name to Wembley Ladies they won the Premier League Cup in 1996 and were F.A.Cup runners-up the following season, losing to Millwall Lionesses. Their best League finish was fourth in the National Division, and it was following their relegation from the top flight that the name change to Barnet took place. Jones saved the club from extinction two years ago, when a pre-season mass exodus of players seriously threatened its closure. They recovered well to finish fifth last season in the Southern Division - only one point behind runners-up Ipswich Town. However this season, they have found the going much tougher and are six points of safety after a huge number of narrow defeats this season. Coach Tracey Kevins will be in charge of the Bees for the rest of the season, starting with this Sunday's home game against high riding Bristol City, and she will be assisted by John Longuehaye.
