Women's Soccer Scene
I didn't expect it at all - Rachel
 Women's Football News 14 May 2004

England full back Rachel Unitt's consistent performances for her country during the course of the season have been rewarded with her winning this year's International Player of the Year Award, as voted for by Head Coach Hope Powell and her coaching staff. The popular defender was an ever present in all of the games played and she told Women's Soccer Scene: "It's fantastic, really great. I am really honoured that all the international staff have picked me for this award - I didn't expect it at all."

Overall it has been a good season for England with just two defeats, one of those against World Champions Germany. "We've had a great year, the last game against Nigeria was a bit of a blip really."

With just over a year to go before the UEFA Championships are held in this country, so does Rachel feel that England are currently on course for a good tournament? "Yes, I think we are! We've got several friendlies before the tournament so hopefully we can win a few games, get a bit more confidence and be in the right shape."

More immediately, Rachel will be in the Fulham side this Saturday for the Premier League title showdown with Arsenal at Highbury. "It's just like a cup final - our biggest game of the season. The
League Cup Final was a big game but this league game is even bigger now because it rewards consistency.

"The league is all we've got left to play for now and we'll give it everything on the day.

"It's going to be a tough year coming up - hopefully we can get the win we want and go further in Europe next year."
