Women's Soccer Scene
We're gelling pretty well - goal ace Trudy
 Women's Football News 25 Aug 2004

Experienced striker Trudy Williams is still 'doing the business' at the very top - with three goals in the opening two games for Bristol Rovers who have made an excellent start to the new season. Fresh from scoring the winner for Rovers against Leeds United on Sunday, Trudy told Women's Soccer Scene of her optimism for the season. "It's a dream start," she says, "Six points - we're halfway to last season's total already! It was a very tough game today, although we went 2-0 up they came back at us quite strong and it just meant us holding on at the end. But I think we showed good team spirit and we deserved the win in the end."

Both of Rovers' goals against Leeds were bundled efforts from corners, and Trudy takes a typical goalscorer's view of things: "They all count! You should be following in shots, Louise (Hutton) did that on the first one and I was just lucky enough to have the ball sit on the line for the second and just managed to toe poke it in - kicked the post as well and that was a bit silly of me! They're all goals, they all count and a win's a win. I'm quite pleased, I had a pretty poor start to the season last year as I was injured but it's nice to get on the scoresheet and be consistently scoring."

Bristol Rovers were not among the fancied teams at the start of the season but a number of impressive new signings, including Dutch captain Annemieke Griffioen, have taken them to second place. But where does Trudy feel they can realistically aim for? "I can't see why we can't finish up as high as fourth or fifth with a bit of hard work," she replies, "we're putting in hard work in training at the moment - we've been doing a lot of running and we're very fit. We've got a couple of internationals coming in from Holland, one made her debut today and played particularly well, and I think we're gelling pretty well as a team.

"I played with Barry in the Premiership and to be honest the second season (after promotion) was the hardest. You don't know what the other teams are doing when you play the first season and in the second you're expected to know that little bit more, but we've made a flying start and couldn't ask for more.

"It would be nice if we could stay there for the rest of the season - as long as we keep scoring goals, which I think we are quite capable of, we could stay there and hopefully finish as high as second, you never know!"

Next up for Rovers this week is a tough match away to title hopefuls Charlton Athletic but Trudy feels that there is cause for optimism. "We pushed Charlton quite close last season and only lost 2-1 at home, so we're hoping to do pretty well in that and it will be a good test to see how far we have come.

"I can't believe that Leeds lost 8-0 last week, they didn't look like a team that had been. They must have just had a bad day but they made us work hard today, and maybe that's what we needed before next week."
