Women's Soccer Scene
Annemieke ready for English challenge
 Women's Football News 18 Sep 2004

Annemieke Griffioen will be leading out the Dutch national team against England next week and she is hoping that her team can go on to bigger things from there. Holland are using the two friendlies to prepare for their UEFA Championship group match later in the month but Annemieke is looking forward to the challenge of playing against players she will face every week this season. "We have a big game against Denmark coming up," she told Women's Soccer Scene. "The games against England are good preparation for that match.

"It's a very big game against England too but we have a new team and a new coach. The important game is against Denmark but I think the English squad is a good team to prepare against."

Annemieke signed for Bristol Rovers at the start of the season and is settling down at her new club. "I enjoy it a lot," she says, "I like the team and the players, there are good stadiums - it's perfect!

"We have played a few games, sometimes it's a high standard, sometimes it's not so high. Our team has a lot of new players so we improve with every game, but we need more games to get better and better.

"I don't know all of the teams but I have seen some of them. I think we might have a good chance to go for the top three, maybe. I don't think we have the best squad but we will improve and we will make it hard for the best squads to beat us. We played Charlton and I don't think we are that far behind them - they were the better team but next time they will find it harder to beat us."

Annemieke admits to not knowing too much about her opponents next week but singled out one of her recent opponents. "I don't know the England squad very well, but we'll see. I played against Katie Chapman recently and I know she is strong and good in the air, so we'll have to watch out for her!"
