Bristol City have swooped to sign Oxford City striker Deanne Tomkins as they bid to move away from the relegation places in the National Division. She is set to go straight into the squad for their tough match away to Charlton Athletic on Sunday. The 16-year-old has been among the most prolific forwards at Combination level and she cannot wait to test herself against the top players in the country with her new club. "I'm definitely looking forward to it," says Deanne. "It's been a big shock really! I'm just looking forward to playing the first game - starting or just getting on would be great. "Playing at the top level is anyone's dream if you play football. Now I've just got to go on and prove myself. Hopefully I can take my form into the higher level, it's a big step but we'll see how it goes." Deanne has trained with her new team mates and early impressions have been good, one City player in particular. "The girls here are really cool, they invite you in and make you feel welcome," she says. "Macca (Rachel McArthur) is an England player and she is superb." Deanne, who lives in Oxford and attends Oxford & Cherwell College, where she is taking a Football Diploma. She started playing at the age of five in boys football and, at the age of 12, played for local sides Quarry Girls and Barton Girls. "I also played a season at the Northampton Centre of Excellence," she adds. "Then I moved into women's football with Rover Oxford (now Oxford City) and was top scorer in both seasons I played." She was also captain of Oxfordshire under-16s in the two years she played for them. Two years ago, Deanne scored 57 goals as Rover Oxford won the Southern Region League title and followed up with a haul of 38 last season, which made her the leading goalscorer in the South West Combination. She currently tops the league's scoring charts again with 10 in five league games so City will be hoping that she can reproduce some of this form over the next few weeks. | ||||||||||||||||
