England's hopes of a good UEFA Championships this summer received a boost in today's Finals draw when they avoided reigning Champions Germany in their group.

Hope Powell's team will begin their tournament against Finland - the only team in the competition below them in the world rankings - on Sunday 5th June at the City of Manchester Stadium. The match will be the second in the tournament, which will kick off two hours earlier with an intriguing match between the other teams in Group A - Denmark and Sweden at Blackpool F.C.

England will then take on Denmark three days later before finishing the group stages against World Cup runners-up Sweden on 11 June. Both of those matches will take place at Ewood Park, home of Blackburn Rovers F.C.

Favourites Germany will kick off Group B with a mouthwatering match against Norway at Warrington on 6 June, whilst France play Italy on the same day at Preston North End.

The draw was made by Sven-Goran Eriksson and Minister of Sport Richard Caborn MP, along with Karen Espelund of the UEFA Women's Football Committee and UEFA Chief Executive Lars- Christer Olsson. The ceremony also saw the unveiling of the new trophy (pictured), the original one has been kept by Germany who have won the tournament three times.
