Charlton Athletic and England star Danielle Murphy has kick-started the new year in style, having been voted the FA Nationwide Women's Player of the Month for January, and her Addicks colleague and near-namesake Danny Murphy was on hand to present her with the award.A selection panel, which included England coach Hope Powell, chose Danielle for her versatility and ability to play both in defence and midfield this season and influence on a side which has risen steadily to the top of the Premier League. Danielle capped off a successful January with one of the goals in the 5-0 defeat of West Ham in the Fifth Round of the FA Women's Cup. "We've had some great results recently and we've all worked incredibly hard as we are competing in two cup competitions as well as the league," said Danielle. "To be named Nationwide Player of the Month is a real honour and with only a handful of league games left to go until the end of the season, as well as The FA Nationwide Premier League Cup Final against Arsenal on 6 March, I'm hoping that I can keep putting in the performances to help the team get the results." Danny Murphy presented Danielle with a specially commissioned magnum of champagne before Charlton's FA Cup clash against Leicester City at The Valley. Danny Murphy commented: "I was delighted to be asked to present Danielle with her award, although it is a bit strange having two Danny Murphy's at the club! "Danielle has been playing very well and I would like to wish her and the team all the best for the remainder of the season." Nationwide's Chris Hull also offered Danielle praise: "We would like to congratulate Danielle on her top-class performances and her contribution to Charlton Athletic's league and cup campaigns. "She is proving to be an invaluable asset to the side and has joined a small, but ever growing, group of players to be named Nationwide Player of the Month." | ||||||||||||||||
