 Cheryl Baber remained in an upbeat mood, despite Bristol City going down to their first defeat of the season at the hands of Reading Royals last Sunday. The speedy winger has impressed during her team's early matches and she insists that there is more to come from her team. "Three wins out of three wasn't bad," Cheryl told Women's Soccer Scene after the game. "Today was disappointing, we know we didn't play or pass very well but it is something to work on for next week. "It was pretty much like last week's match (against Watford), it was very tight. We knew that if we got a goal, we could score more but as soon as we went one behind, our heads went down. We kept battling, changed to 4-3-3 to try and push on, but sometimes the luck goes against you." The match was City's first without key stalwarts Carly Bryant and Michelle Munro, who have gone globe-trotting for 12 months, but Cheryl does not believe that this was factor. "No excuses," she replies, "because we know we've got the players in the squad. We did miss Michelle and Carly, as we've not really got an experienced central midfielder at the moment. We've got Jo How, who is very young but a good player, and Jo Johnson-Taylor who was only playing her second game there today. We miss Carly's presence generally as she was a great leader, but Darel (Poole) is just as good at leading the team." Cheryl herself has made a good start to the season after a long battle to win a regular place in the starting line up, and scored the winning goal the previous match against Watford. "When given the chance, I've shown what I can do," she says. "I think I am playing my best football now - when the manager shows confidence in you it's a big boost. Last season, I wasn't ever really given a chance to prove myself first team wise, but Wayne Roberts is very confident in me. "I've been working very hard off the pitch to get myself fit - working on my strength because I'm not the biggest girl! But a couple of goals is a good start for me." This Sunday, City face National Division opposition in the form of Chelsea in the First Round of the Premier League Cup in a repeat of last season's First Round tie, which City won 2-1. "We're all looking forward to that," says Cheryl. "It was a close game last year, and I presume it will be the same this time. We've not seen them play but we know they are going to have a good squad, being a Premiership side, and it's going to be a good match. "We've got a very good team spirit this year. Our manager Wayne Roberts has built it up a lot, he's been very good with the girls off the field as well as on it. Everyone is behind each other and we've all got confidence in ourselves."
