Linette Newton completed a huge challenge on Sunday by competing in the London Marathon in order to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy.Talking to Women's Soccer Scene a few days afterwards, the Keynsham Town goalkeeper revealed that she is back on the road to recovery. "I was a little tired on Monday," smiled Linette. "I felt stiff and sore, especially in my knees and hips but it's getting a bit easier now and I am definitely on the mend. "I did it for a special reason," she admitted. "My brother Alec unfortunately passed away a few months ago and I promised him I would run the London Marathon, for him, so I ran for his charity and raised £10,000 - which makes me their top fund raiser so I'm quite pleased with that!" So, after all the effort, what was Linette's time? "Four hours, 28 minutes," she proudly replies, "which was under my target of four and a half hours. I finished in the top 1,000 for my age group and in the top half of all the runners, so it's not bad for my first marathon. "The start wasn't too bad - you're quite packed in because there are so many people. The crowds are excellent and the atmosphere is amazing! I found after eight miles that I had quite sore hips but I just persevered and at 22 miles, you know you are almost there." Linette was not without support on the day. "My family were all there and luckily we (Keynsham) did not have a game on Sunday so a lot of the team were there. They were chasing all around London to try and see me in various spots!" The London Marathon is only a part of Linette's efforts to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy. "I have set up my own website at www.justgiving.com/linettenewton and anyone can make donations online, it's really simple to do," she says. "If you are a taxpayer, the government will play 28% of everything you donate. "I have been doing other fund raising work for the charity and they have asked me to stay on and do some more work for them after the marathon." Now she has run her first ever marathon, does Linette have the taste for any more? "I don't know about next year as we have an important season ahead," she admits. "But I am tempted to do the New York marathon in the next three years and maybe a couple of half marathons, the ones in Bristol and Bath are very close so you never know." | ||||||||||||||||
