Women's Soccer Scene
Karen thrilled at second award
 Women's Football News 28 May 2006

A eventful year for Karen Carney was crowned in style as the Birmingham City winger was named as Young Player of the Year for the second season in succession.

Karen becomes the first player to win the award in successive seasons and rounds off a year in which she starred in Euro 2005, appeared in the UEFA Under-19 Championships, established herself as a regular in the England side and fought a successful battle against relegation with Birmingham.

"It's been a really good 12 months," Karen told Women's Soccer Scene. "I went to Euro 2005 and with the under-19s and they were two good experiences.

"Birmingham have done considerably well, with all the problems that were going on, so it has been a nice cap to the end of the season.

"It's a really big achievement and quite a big shock to be honest. I think Lianne Sanderson has been outstanding for Arsenal this season - she would have been in the running for (the award) and deserves a good mention as well. But on a personal level it's a good achievement, especially for two years running so I am very happy with that.

After severe financial problems last summer, Birmingham started the season late and battled against relegation for virtually the whole of the campaign before climbing away in the last few matches. "We won four games on the bounce and finished joint fifth," says Karen. "That is down to the hard work the manager and the players have put in.

"It will be a big relief. I think we have got some sponsorship for the next two years so it's more comfortable now and let's have a good season next time."
