Kelly Saggs was delighted with Aston Villa's 4-2 win away to Liverpool which has taken them to the top of the Northern Division table. Villa's victory was a great result against one of the teams regarded as favourites to win the title and Kelly told Women's Soccer Scene: "It was a tremendous performance. We heard about the reputation of Liverpool and that they are probably the favourites to win the league, so we were organised and every player worked together. Maybe we surprised them a bit." Whilst the Villa defence took much of the plaudits on the day, Kelly also reserved praise for the midfield and the strikers. "We have had a bit of a problem scoring goals but all were well worked, even the own goal, and were quite decent finishes," she says. "Because of injuries, our full back Natalie Courtney had to play in goal so we kept things tight at the back and tried to stop them getting shots in. I had a sore head after the game because I had to head the ball away so many times! "The back four played well as a unit but Kelly Pinner had a good game in the centre of midfield and kept us going. Danielle Selmes also did well on the left and Natalie Gibson scored two good goals." Villa therefore head the table after two wins from two games but Kelly is not getting carried away. "We had a bad result against Wolves in the League Cup so we got together to raise our performance," she says. "We couldn't ask for a better start in the league with two wins but we are just looking to improve on last season. We have a few young players and we're trying to get that consistency we may have lacked in the past but the squad is good, maybe we need to strengthen in one or two areas though. "We are not expected to be among the top four teams so we would like to shock a few people. I am a competitive person so I would like to finish in the top three if possible. "The Northern Division is a tough one to get out of - only one team can go up so you have got to put in the performances. We've gone up a couple of times in recent years but haven't been able to stay there, but now they extended the top division it should work in promoted teams' favour as they will have a little more time to adjust. It's another ambition of mine to go back up again, but perhaps not this season." Due to them having been knocked out of the League Cup, Villa have no game this Sunday but they return to action the following week against Crewe Alexandra. "It's a top of the table clash," smiles Kelly. "We're looking forward to that match, you always do after you have had a good victory, but we cannot get complacent."
