Women's Soccer Scene
Sophie aiming to knock out employers!
 Women's Football News 8 Sep 2006

Bath City take on Team Bath in the Preliminary Round of the F.A.Women's Cup this Sunday and for one member of the Bath City squad, the game will have extra significance.

Sophie Hamer will be attempting to put one over on the team from Bath University - the place where she works and is effectively an employee of Team Bath.

"I thought it was typical that we'd draw each other," Sophie told Women's Soccer Scene. "We've got to play them in the league as well this season and it should be a good game."

For the midfielder, they will hardly be unknown opposition. "I work at Bath University as a duty manager," she reveals. "I work with one of their players and another duty manager who helps run the (Team Bath) team - and I also know the manager and the majority of the team!"

So has there been much pre-match banter at the university? "No, we're just looking forward to the game, it should be a memorable one," she replies. "We'll wait and see what happens on Sunday - I don't want to get too many digs in, just in case I get too much back!"

Sophie joined Bath City from Keynsham Town four years ago and her time with the club has been eventful. "It started with the Somerset County Cup, which we won with a surprise victory over Clevedon in the Final," she says. "Then came relegation the season afterwards, which was a bit of a disappointment, but we were without a goalkeeper for the whole year. Last season, we went back up and we've now got a new goalkeeper so that is good news.

"This year, we aim to concentrate on the league, anything we get in the Cup is a bonus but we just want to stay up and finish as high as possible. We are a bit of a Cup team in recent years though - we like to take the pressure off from the league, have a bit of fun in the cup and get as far as we can."

Victory in Sunday's Cup tie will mean a trip to Cornwall for the winners, as they will have to play away to St Ives Town from the Jaipur Cornwall League. "It'll be a long journey if we were able to get through to the next round," admits Sophie. "I don't really know what kind of team they are, so it would be an interesting one."
