 Premier League club Keynsham Town will play Drogheda United LFC in a special Charity match at the Crown Field, Keynsham this coming Saturday 12th April 2008 with a 6.30pm kick-off. Keynsham manager Barrie Newton commented: "There are several firsts in this fixture, plus a very good local charitable cause to be supported. Although we have played a number of overseas clubs, both in the UK and abroad, this is the first time we have played a side from the Republic of Ireland and the first time a game has been scheduled at home for a Saturday evening, which is a day normally associated with men's football. "We hope this will encourage a good attendance from local football supporters in general as well as the women's game. "All the net proceeds from the special souvenir entry programme costing £2 will go to the local Gateway Club charity, which is part of Mencap. They do great work in Keynsham for children with a number of difficulties in life, organising weekly activities and summer trips as well as giving parents a rest from their caring duties. A number of our players' families have direct experience of the outstanding work done by this local charity and its volunteers so when we were approached to help to raise money for them, we were delighted to help and thought it would make a great combined event when Drogheda also asked if we could provide them with opposition for their pre-season UK tour. "Drogheda United are a growing force in Irish women's football, having been promoted four divisions in recent years, to begin to mirror the outstanding success of their men's team that has been so dominant in recent seasons. The ladies side contain a number of Irish internationals and will be well organised by player coach Grainne Kierans who has had an extensive playing career in England with a number of Premier League clubs. It will be also interesting to learn at first hand from the Drogheda party how women's football in Ireland shapes up with its summer league, particularly as the FA in England is now looking at that format for the proposed new Elite league here."
