Leafield overcome Belles in Final
 Women's Football News 13 Apr 2008

A competitive Birmingham County Girls Cup Final ended in victory for Leafield Athletic as they emerged 3-1 winners at County Headquarters.

A determined Wolverhampton Belles side almost took the advantage in the early minutes when Kate Marshall was denied by Charlotte Thompson after taking the ball past Eleanor Cox in the Leafield goal.

A disappointed Nicola Hall saw her attempt to tackle Elloise Russell hit the back of the net at the opposite end of the pitch ten minutes into the game. Russell had taken the ball down well on the edge of the box and turned neatly to force Hall to tackle.

Laura Stich slotted home Leafield's second strike in the 27th minute, with some solid defensive work from Wolverhampton denying a third shortly after.

A neat run down the right wing by Jade Robinson was cleared by Leafield but Belles forced a free kick on the edge of the penalty box. Katie Nardone's shot just flew over the top right corner of the goal.

Jamie-Leigh Fowler's neat chip left Lauren Turner stranded in the 48th minute to score Leafield's third goal.

Seven minutes later Courtney Cassidy scored Belles' worthy consolation goal after terrific persistence from the Black Country side.

Turner pulled out a number of brave saves throughout the game, including one in the 37th minute when Amber Hughes created a one-on-one chance.

As sunshine turned to hail, Wolverhampton forced a final corner which was scrambled away - Eleanor Cox the brave goalkeeper at the opposite end of the pitch.

England International, Sue Smith made a half time appearance, coaching youngsters from both teams.
