Plymouth gain Final revenge
 Women's Football News 19 Apr 2008

Plymouth Argyle made amends for losing last year's Devon County Cup Final on penalties to Cullompton Rangers by winning this season's repeat Final at Newton Abbot.

The first half hour of this match was even, but for the remainder of the half Cullompton seemed to retreat into their shells a little and their attacks became more sporadic. On the other hand, Plymouth looked comfortable on the attack, playing some passing football and putting pressure on the Cullompton defence from both flanks and creating numerous chances.

After seven minutes, Cullompton's Catherine Wright cleared a difficult cross and a minute later she was at the other end, firing a free kick across the box and just the wrong side of the far post.

Cullompton goalkeeper Maxine Coupe plucked a free kick by Jemma Rose from under the bar, then her side put together a string of passes and Wright fired just over.

Then came the Plymouth surge as Rose had a free kick from either flank saved by Coupe, who then came running out of the area to make a decisive challenge to rob Chloe Roberts from scoring and saved a header from Aoife Aherne. Plymouth's Becky Atkins was then put through but she shot over.

On the stroke of half time, Angie Pope had the best chance of the match to score for Cullompton but the veteran striker, who would normally have put the ball away, shot over the bar after receiving a well placed free kick from Wright.

After the break, Rose tested Coupe who seemed to be keeping an impassable barrier, but in the 57th minute she could not stop Plymouth from taking the lead when a precision cross by Laura Perrett found Vicky Barter who drilled the ball low into the corner of the net.

Eleven minutes later, Perrett ran through for Plymouth but her close range shot was brilliantly saved by Coupe who moments later had to make a brave challenge to deny Atkins from scoring.

Plymouth went 2-0 up with fifteen minutes remaining when Roberts slotted a delightful ball into the path of Perrett and the striker drove a low shot into the corner, giving Coupe no chance.

After the match, the donor of the Cup Ms Lee Hayward, wife of Devon County Cup Competitions Chairman Barry Hayward, presented the trophy to Plymouth captain Katie Middleton and Laura Perrett received the Player of the Match award.
