 Twelve months after being promoted from the West Midlands League Southern Division, Coventry Copsewood are on the up once again, another fantastic season sees Mick Conneely's side promoted in style for the second year in succession.Following their recent 11-0 emphatic victory at Walsall, Copsewood clinched the Premier Division Championship and with it, promotion to the Midlands Combination thanks to a five-goal haul from Nicola Foskett, four goals from Ria Baker and Jodie McGulkin's brace. Speaking to the Coventry Observer Newspaper back in May 2007, manager Conneely said he: "...would be surprised if his side dropped a point when they start their Premier Division campaign at the start of the season." So far, Connelly's side have been true to those words as they cemented around a powerhouse squad led by club captain Leanne McKenna, whose family football pedigree she inherited from granddad and former Sky Blues legendary defender George Curtis is well documented. Although there may have been more that a few Copsewood players that were sceptical of that big task of not dropping a single point this season as they headed towards new heights at a Premier Division level, so far they have delivered and with two home games against Shrewsbury Town and Walsall at their Allard Way headquarters still remaining, Copsewood were be looking for maximum points. Under team chief Mick Conneely, who has been at the helm for seven years since the club's formation as Coventry Marconi, Copsewood have enjoyed another great season, a fantastic FA Women's Cup run which only ended in a narrow single goal deficit at the hands of Premier League opponents Crewe Alexandra. Recent recruit Jodie McGulkin is proving to be a real find with four goals in six appearances and with deadly duo Nicola Foskett and Ria Baker having netted thirty plus goals each along the way, this has helped paved the way for the club to reach new heights. Nineteen straight wins in a Premier Division league campaign tells the story of a what rates as the greatest season in the club's eight year history, having amassed just under 100 goals along the way while only conceding 17 goals. But with the likes of higher grade opponents Crewe and Alfreton this season never really outplaying a Copsewood side, they will be looking forward to Combination football and a short break ahead of the new season, and one player who is currently looking forward to playing in the Midland Combination is Nicola Foskett who has been in outstanding form, terrorising defences with her pace and clinical finishing helped along the way in the goalscoring department by Leanne McKenna, Amanda Whalley, Ria Baker and Jodie McGulkin. Eight years on since starting out as Coventry Marconi, only Marsha Towey and Kayleigh Brookes remain from the small squad Conneely inherited after initially being asked to help out as manager. Asked about the recent success Conneely said: "I've got an absolutely fantastic bunch of girls here who are extremely professional. They combine a dedicated work ethic and a fantastic team spirit and are on another planet compared to some of the sides they have been up against this season." Promotion, a Team of the Round Award following a fantastic FA Cup run together with a casting eye from a couple of Hope Powell's England scouts recently - not bad for a team formed out of a few work mates from the Marconi communications factory that once stood opposite the ground. Marconi may be gone and confined to the history books but Copsewood are writing their own piece of history as they hit new heights in ladies football with promotion for the second year running.
