Arsenal retained the Premier League title after coming from behind to beat Chelsea 4-1 in front of a crowd of 5,285 at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners needed the win in order to put themselves beyond the reach of Everton but it was Chelsea who made the better start and Eniola Aluko went close but could not direct her header on target from a great Sian Larkin cross. Kelly Smith had a goal disallowed for offside but Chelsea deservedly took the lead on 16 minutes, as a long ball over the Arsenal defence released Emma Whitter on goal and she clipped a neat shot over Emma Byrne to put her side ahead. The goal stung Arsenal into action and Karen Carney was inches away from reaching a low cross from Jayne Ludlow in front of goal. However the England winger was on the scoresheet two minutes later, Kelly Smith hooking a pass into her path and she coolly finished past Siobhan Chamberlain. Arsenal were then handed a great chance to go in front as Casey Stoney was penalised for handball in the area and a penalty was awarded. The decision looked a little harsh but Chamberlain dived low to her left to turn Sanderson's kick around the post. A lightning burst into the area from Smith brought Arsenal's next chance, they were awarded another penalty after she was brought down by Emma Delves. This time Smith took the kick herself and she made no mistake from the spot. Smith could have scored a second when she swept a Carney pass wide of the goal as Arsenal finished the half on top, and they took the initiative from the restart as a speculative long range effort from Smith landed on the roof of the net and Chamberlain pulled off a fine reaction save from Ludlow's angled shot. Kim Little struck the bar with a 20-yard shot but the Scottish youngster was not to be denied, marking a classy display with her first goal from the club, tapping in from close range after Smith had tricked her way past Faye Rabson. With six minutes remaining, Arsenal rounded off a memorable night for their club as Carney exchanged passes with Ludlow before beating Chamberlain to complete a 4-1 victory.
