During the summer of 2009, the Lancashire FA Girls League re-directed teams playing within its youth section into localised Leagues. On the whole, the relocation of these teams has proved to be a huge success and given the County a more solid foundation to build upwards through the age ranges in local girls' football. The next phase of the re-structure within the County will concentrate on the higher age end of the youth divisions. For Season 2010-11, the Lancashire FA Women's County League will launch its Under-18 Division. The Division will aim to maintain participation levels within youth football and provide a pathway into women's football. The focus of the League will be to reduce the 'drop off' in female football when girls reach the age of 16 and 17 years, when they may be lost from the game due to the daunting jump into the adult Leagues. By keeping existing teams together for a further year or two, this will allow the players to further develop before entering the women's game. On a local level, there is insufficient strength for Leagues to currently operate at this age group, therefore as a County FA we must look to enhance provision at this age level and provide girls with the opportunity to grow comfortably within the female game.
