Leeds Carnegie have withdrawn their application for a place in the FA Women's Super League. Leeds were one of 16 clubs to apply for one of the eight places in the league, due to start in March 2011, and were one of the leading contenders to be founder members following a number of Cup Final appearances in recent seasons. The club split from Leeds United two years ago and the running was taken over by Leeds Metropolitan University but in a statement, they said: "The University cannot commit to the substantial increase in budgets proposed under plans for Super League." Leeds Carnegie will continue to play in the FA Tesco Women's Premier League for the remainder of the 2009-10 season, a campaign which could end in success as they will take on Everton in the Premier League Cup Final at Rochdale on Thursday 11 February.
