Female coaches of the future are being invited along to Upper Clapton Rugby Club in Thornwood, Epping on Wednesday 3rd February where the Essex County Football Association will be staging a 'Working With Teams' module aimed at anyone planning to work with school or club football teams in the future to act as a pre-cursor to the more widely-recognised Level One coaching course. Open to students aged 16 or over, including teachers, assistants and parents, the free six-hour course will teach individuals how to understand best practice in relation to running school and youth club teams and player development as well as being part of a team, enhancing the learning environment and passing on technical knowledge, communication and listening skills. Theory subjects such as warm-ups, formations and strategies are also included which relate to the changing circumstances in the game. Proceedings will begin at 9.30am until 4pm and ECFA Education Development Officer, Lana Gillard, is keen to add a few more names to the growing list of attendees, explaining: "This forms part of our girls development programme running in local schools and this module has been set up to support teachers, teaching assistants, parents and Young Leaders to run more activities for female players. "The next step for coaches after completing this would either be the FA Level 1 course or the Youth Award Module 1. We are running a female-only Level 1 in May which might prove a smooth transition." As part of their more regular coaching schedule, the ECFA are planning further dates specifically focussing on youth coaching and, as Lana highlights, training children can be quite a different proposition to adults. "It's important to have a connection with children to make the sessions fun and enjoyable and to structure a coaching and training programme to support each child's development," she added. "We are striving to encourage more females to get involved with coaching who can, in turn, act as role models for our players of the future, particularly in the north-west of the County."
