 F.A.Women's Cup - Road to the FinalAt long last, Liverpool Feds were able to play their Third Round tie with Rochdale last Sunday and, after several postponements, it was the Feds who emerged as 1-0 winners against the Northern Combination table toppers. Gemma Perschine scored the only goal of the game to send her side into the Fourth Round where they will face Premier League opposition. Curzon Ashton came through the last round with a hard earned 2-1 win away to Middlesbrough and the Lancashire side must play away to high riding Combination opponents again. The club was formed in March 1988 as Oldham Athletic LFC as part of the Football Community Scheme and they joined the North West League two years later. They moved rapidly up the leagues and in 1998 began playing at the home of Curzon Ashton FC in the town of Ashton-under-Lyne which saw the name of the club move to its present form. In 2000 they finished as Champions of the Northern Combination and were promoted to the Premier League. They exceeded all expectations the following season when they were runners-up to Leeds United in the Northern Division and were third in the next two campaigns, reaching the quarter finals of the F.A.Women's Cup both times. In the summer of 2005 the members took the decision to change their name once again, this time adopting the Club name as a whole, becoming Curzon Ashton LFC at the end of June in readiness for their move into their new home, the £4m Tameside Stadium, a Conference compliant stadium including a separate third-generation full-size all-weather facility. The ground was built for the Club by Tameside MBC assisted by a £500,000 grant from The Football Foundation. However in 2006-07 they were relegated from the Northern Division after a difficult season. On a brighter note, Curzon won the right to host the Greater Manchester Centre of Excellence for Girls. A superb set up for very talented young players, quite a few of Curzon's coaches and current players actively coach at the centre. Fortunes were to turn around quickly though and they won the Northern Combination title at the first attempt, winning every game bar one to regain their Premier League status. After 20 years service to women's football, manager Dave Ryan decided to step down and take a back seat role as club secretary - a fantastic season and a fitting way for Dave to retire after years of voluntary work to ladies football. A new Chairman was elected in Sportswear International owner, Kirk Robertson. Survival was achieved in their first season back and this time around they are aiming to cement themselves in the second tier once more. Manager Mark Bradshaw, assisted by Luke Turner, has assembled a squad captained by Amanda Goodwin and which contains key players such as Carla Cleworth, Charlotte Higginson, Sophie Turrell, Emma Lambourne and striker Shelley James who is one of the leading scorers in the division. Curzon are likely to start as favourites for the match, which takes place at Heswall FC, but this game is likely to be a very close one for the right to play Aston Villa in the Fifth Round.
