Liverpool announce Thomas loan deal

Liverpool FC Women have completed the signing of Martha Thomas from fellow Women’s Super League club Tottenham Hotspur.

The 29-year-old joins the Reds on loan for the rest of the season and represents a fourth capture of the January window for Gareth Taylor’s side.

An experienced forward player, who can operate anywhere across the front line, Thomas has spent the past two and a half seasons with Spurs, claiming 13 goals in 65 total appearances. That followed two seasons in the WSL with both Manchester United and West Ham United where she had firmly established herself as a leading striker.

Her football pathway had begun in the college system in the USA at Charlotte 49ers before a brief spell at Le Havre in France.

Thomas is now an established international, with more than 50 caps for Scotland, collecting 21 goals in the process.

She told Liverpoolfc.com: “It means a lot and I’m really excited to be here.

“I think they are a really ambitious club and I think it’s the right fit, right now in my career. Even though it’s a short loan I’m really looking forward to be here and help this team climb the table where they deserve to be.

“I know of Gaz [Taylor] from his time at Manchester City and know how good a coach he is. That drew me and also to play under a coach who is an ex-striker drew me. I’m always looking to learn new things and be coached in that sense.

“I want to help this team. A club like Liverpool with the history they have and what a strong foundation they have here are amazing. I think all the right things are in place and now it’s just about picking up the points and I hope to help the team do that.”

Thomas will be helped to settle with the Reds by plenty of familiar faces from her previous clubs and national team squad, including fellow Scots Jenna Clark and Sam Kerr,

“I spoke to them quite a bit. It’s important to make sure that not only the football but the people that are here fit me as well, so it’s nice to see a few familiar faces and a few others from my time at West Ham with Leanne Kiernan and Grace Fisk, Gemma Evans at Manchester United, so a few familiar faces which is nice.”

In terms of the type of player the fans could look forward to, Thomas added: “I think I’m a threat in behind, my creativity and I can get on the end of things.

“I would also say me defending from the front as well trying to win the ball back and create chances high up the pitch.”

Thomas will wear the number 31 shirt for Liverpool for the rest of the 2025-26 campaign and is expected to be available for the Adobe Women’s FA Cup trip to London Bees on Sunday.
