West Ham progress at Newcastle

Viviane Asseyi starred with a goal and two assists as West Ham United produced a professional performance to defeat Newcastle United 3-0 at the Gateshead International Stadium, booking their place in the Fifth Round of the Adobe Women's FA Cup.

The Barclays Women's Super League side, despite their struggles in the league, proved too strong in the end for their Championship opponents in this Fourth Round tie on Friday evening.

Newcastle started the game brightly but the breakthrough came shortly before half time when Newcastle defender Charlotte Wardlaw brought down Asseyi inside the penalty area. The 32-year-old dusted herself off and confidently dispatched the resulting spot kick past goalkeeper Anna Tamminen, sending it into the corner to give the Hammers the lead at the interval.

West Ham doubled their advantage moments before the hour mark, with Asseyi turning provider this time. The experienced forward delivered a precise pull back from the right, allowing Japan striker Riko Ueki to fire home emphatically from the edge of the box with a composed finish, curling home a delightful left foot shot into the top corner.

The game was put beyond doubt in the 71st minute as Asseyi provided her second assist of the evening. Newcastle had actually gone very close to pulling one back moments earlier, when lively substitute Emily Murphy broke through and saw her shot come back off the post. The Hammers immediately went on the attack and Asseyi teed up Sarah Brasero-Carreira, who slotted a low finish into the bottom corner to seal a welcome win for the visitors.

A solid display therefore saw West Ham progress confidently into the last sixteen, whilst for Newcastle, despite a spirited showing, the night ultimately underlined the challenge of facing higher division opposition. The Magpies now go back to their promotion challenge in Barclays WSL2 and West Ham also shift focus back to their domestic campaign and survival battle, buoyed by this cup success.
