Linfield hit six on opening day

The new Danske Bank NI Women’s Premiership season got underway on Wednesday and the opening day leaders of the table - which has been extended to eight teams this season - are Linfield after they defeated newly promoted Mid Ulster Ladies 6-0.

Rebecca Bassett scored a second half hat-trick to spearhead the win, being joined on the scoresheet by Katie Dickson, Keri Halliday and Mia Fitzsimmons.

Cliftonville got off to a good start with a 4-0 success away to Sion Swifts. All of the goals came in the last half hour, Kirsty McGuinness giving them the lead and sister Caitlin McGuinness also getting on the scoresheet, either side of a goal from Marissa Callaghan.

Champions Glentoran were also 4-0 winners against the other newcomers, Lisburn Ladies. Joely Andrews and Nadene Caldwell put the Glens two ahead inside the opening ten minutes and Casey Howe made it three on the stroke of half time, before Caragh Hamilton rounded off the scoring during the second half.

Crusaders Strikers were the other winners on the opening day, 3-0 against Derry City. Emily Wilson opened the scoring for the Crues five minutes before half time and she doubled their lead from the penalty spot midway through the second half. Amy McGivern rounded off a good day for her side when she scored the third goal, seventeen minutes from time.
