Northampton heading for FAWNL

Northampton Town have won the East Midlands Premier Division with an unbeaten record this season, winning 16 of their 18 games and drawing the other two. Promotion to the FA Women’s National League has been secured with a brilliant record, where the team have scored 75 goals and only conceded eight times with 13 clean sheets.

A secret to their success was their results against their main rivals, beating Lincoln United away (1-0) and at home (2-0), the latter securing the title, beating Chesterfield at home  and drawing away, only conceding in the last minute and finally beating Mansfield Town at home and away. There were other notable performances including a 9-2 win against Rotherham United at Sixfields Stadium and an away win at Oughtibridge WM after being two down at half time (ending up 4-2 winners).

Alongside their league form, the team reached the League Cup semi finals, they won the County Cup, beating local rivals Peterborough United 2-1 in the Final and they reached the FA Cup Third Round, a record breaking run which included a penalty shootout victory over Bedworth United in the First Round, and was finally ended in extra time away to Lincoln City. They also played at Sixfields Stadium twice, with 600+ and then 900+ fans attending the games.

Guiding Northampton to success were joint Managers Lou Barry and Josh Oldfield, with Leah Cudone as captain and leading goalscorer being Alex Dicks, with 36 league and cup goals. This week, Leah announced that she will be retiring at the end of this season, after 21 years of playing football.

Important roles on the pitch have been played by Jo Daniel in goal and Sara Wait, Bianca Luttman and Eden Brown in defence. Player of the Season is Rachael Mumford in midfield.

Off the pitch, Physical performance coach Rebecca MacLaren has been responsible for getting the team in the best shape possible, along with physio Lauren Dunn, Jane Williams (performance psychologist) and James Wiles for constant brilliant social media content.
