Buckie battle out historic victory

Buckie Ladies have been crowned SWF Highlands and Islands League Cup Champions for the very first time, after a close fought final with Sutherland Women at Nairn.

Sutherland had twice pegged back the Moray Firth side in regulation time but there was no resolution in extra time so it took a penalty shootout to separate the sides.

Abbie Louise Marshall opened the scoring for Buckie with a well worked goal in the opening stages and the league leaders looked ready to dominate proceedings but holders Sutherland worked their way back into the game with some nice football, Trisha Macrae scoring a wonderful equaliser from range with the last kick of the first half. Cailtin Carnegie put Buckie back in front in the second half but a strike by Sutherland’s Rachael Sutherland ensured the tie went to extra time at 2-2.

With the stakes high for both sides, extra time was a close fought battle with neither side able to claim an advantage, but in the penalty shootout it was Buckie who showed the nerve to claim their first piece of silverware.
