Subs bring Subway joy

Portsmouth 2 West Ham United 0

Portsmouth brought their difficult Subway Women’s League Cup campaign to a happy ending with a 2 0 win over WSL 1 opponents West Ham United.

Without a point or even a goal in the first three ties and having been unable to fulfil the fixture against Charlton Athletic owing to player unavailability issues, Pompey took on the Hammers who were already qualified for the next phase after three wins.

The opening 20 minutes reflected the lack of jeopardy in the contest as neither side could muster an effort on goal. The much changed visitors looked slightly more likely but it was Pompey who had the first clear sight of goal as a long ball almost sent Meg Hornby clear on Megan Walsh's goal but  Ines Belloumou was able to recover superbly to clear.

Leila Wandeler had the Hammers first effort on goal but was denied by the diving Comfort Erhabor. The Pompey keeper was kept fairly busy as the half drew to a close especially with Viviane Asseyi's set piece deliveries but m despite taking a few knocks in collecting crosses and corners, was able to see Pompey through to the break unbeaten and all square.

Shekiera Martinez was introduced by the visitors and looked dangerous down the right early in the second half. The visitors pressed hard but were generally kept in check by a resolute home defence. The best chance saw a flowing move release Anna Csiki in on goal but Erhabor was out quickly to block the close range shot on 58 minutes.

It was manager Jay Sadler's 250th match in charge at Pompey and his substitutions worked the magic. Tia Primmer broke clear down the left and took the ball round the advancing Walsh before rolling a oass to Jessie Gale for a close range finish on 70 minutes. Then, with the visitors pouring forward in search of an equaliser a later substitute Chloe Sheffield sealed the win with a fine low finish from 12 yards on 86 minutes.

With an international break looming, the boost Pompey will get from this hard fought win may perhaps help them in their WSL 2 campaign when it resumes whilst West Ham will continue into the knock out stages of the League Cup as Group winners despite this result.
