Honeywood are the Golden Girls!
 Women's Football News 18 Mar 2004

A thrilling final and a golden goal sealed the occasion for the Honeywood School as 42 schools from around Essex descended upon the FA Mini Soccer Centre at Clairmont Road, Colchester for the annual schools Adidas Football Community Cup for Girls.

Hosted by the Colchester Utd Community Sports Trust and firmly established in the schools sports calendar, the tournament, now into its sixth year demonstrates the astonishing rate of growth and popularity of girl's football all over the country.

This exciting national 6-a-side competition saw around 350 girls braving the elements and enjoying a fun day of football with the lucky winners, Honeywood, now going on to represent Colchester United in the Southern Region Finals.

After the initial qualifying rounds, the semi final stages saw Colbayns High School of Clacton secure a narrow 1-0 win over Billericay and Honeywood ran out 2-0 winners over local Colchester school St Helena.

Although, there were plenty of goals in the earlier rounds, the spectators would not be treated to any further goal mouth action and the final was deadlocked at 0-0. In a Golden Goal penalty shoot out the Honeywood girls earned their Colchester Utd shirts by winning with just one goal.

Schools from around the South East will now travel to Clairmont Road in Colchester at the end of this month as once again the Community Sports Trust hosts the next round. Schools representing clubs such as West Ham, Tottenham, Ipswich and Norwich will take part in the event with the lucky winners going on to the national finals.

March is certainly the month for female football as Layer Road is also preparing to host their first Nationwide Supporters of Tomorrow "Ladies Day" at the U's vs. Peterborough game on Saturday 27th March. There are 500 free tickets available for all women and girls so if you would like further information on this or opportunities for girl's football in your area please contact the Community Soccer Centre on 01206 578372, visit our website at www.cucst.org.uk or email info@cucst.org.uk
