England girls narrowly beaten
 Women's Football News 21 May 2004

A very youthful England under-19 went down to a narrow 3-2 defeat at the hands of Sweden in their friendly at Solihull Borough.

Playing in front of a sizeable crowd at Danson Park, England, who included a number of debutants, found the going a little tougher against an older Swedish side in preparation for this summer's UEFA Championships, and the Swedes raced into a three-goal lead at half time.

However after the break England played some good football and gave Sweden a scare when pulling two goals back through Arsenal striker Lianne Sanderson, one from the penalty spot. With captain Katie Holtham and the excellent Karen Carney in inspirational form, England sought an equaliser but it would not come, going closest from a Michelle Evans free kick.

There were a number of impressive performances from the young debutants, not least 15-year-old Sophie Clough of Stockport County who played well at right back.
