Scotland hopes are kept alive
 Women's Football News 25 May 2004

Scotland 2 Portugal 1
Scotland kept their UEFA Championship play-off hopes on track with a hard fought win over Portugal. The Scots created numerous chances throughout, but found the stubborn Portugese defence a harder nut to crack than the teams' previous meeting. when they conceded eight goals to Vera Pauw's squad at that time.

Debbie McWhinnie was a constant threat to the Portugese defence throughout, until eventually being replaced through injiry, following a couple of innocuous challenges.

The Glasgow City forward had played a major hand in the Scots making the breakthrough on the stroke of half time, when from her through ball, Julie Fleeting beat the attention of two defenders to send over a well timed cross for Suzanne Grant to fire the Scots ahead.

The second period saw the visitors on the offensive, however the Scots recovered their composure and when Grant's well driven cross was fumbled by the Portugal keeper, substitute Pauline Hamill reacted superbly to head home a loose ball and give the Scots a well earned two-goal cushion with nine minutes remaining.

The visitors responded, and with four minutes remaining, they reduced the deficit but the Scots finished strongly to secure the points.
