China next for victorious England - 14 Mar 2005 - Women's Football NewsEngland 5 (Williams 2,68, Handley 34, Yankey 52, Smith 78)
Mexico 0

England completed their Algarve Cup group with another convincing victory which sees them finish top of the table and earn themselves a final match against women's football giants China on Tuesday.

The result takes England's winning run to six matches - their best sequence for 18 years and they have scored a total of 20 goals in the process.

One change was made from the team which beat Portugal with captain Faye White returning to the centre of defence in place of Casey Stoney and the line-up may be very close to the one which will start Euro 2005 with a fit Kelly Smith also coming into the reckoning.

England went into the game full of confidence and once again scored an early goal. Latching on to an Amanda Barr pass, Fara Williams drove England into a second minute lead.

Barr, who has been in fine form in recent England matches, produced yet another assist just after the half hour with a cross which was volleyed home by Jody Handley for her second goal in three starts.

Teresa Guadalupe Worbiz wasted a great opportunity for Mexico just before half time when she shot over and England were to punish them early in the second half as Rachel Yankey celebrated her 50th cap with a clinical finish from Handley's pass.

England coach Hope Powell made a number of second half substitutions and one of them, Eniola Aluko, was involved straight away as her cross was fumbled by Mexico goalkeeper Jennifer Molina and Williams pounced to score her second goal.

Yankey fired against the bar as England looked dangerous every time they attacked and the fifth goal was not long in coming. Two of the substitues combined to pierce the Mexican defence, Sue Smith exchanging passes with Vicky Exley before slotting home.

With thirteen goals scored and none conceded, England's Euro 2005 preparations are going well at present but they will be able to gauge their progress more accurately against stronger opposition in the form of the Chinese in their final match.

England: Jo Fletcher, Alex Scott, Rachel Unitt, Katie Chapman, Faye White, Mary Phillip, Jody Handley, Fara Williams, Amanda Barr, Emily Westwood, Rachel Yankey. Subs: Casey Stoney (for White 45 mins), Vicky Exley (for Westwood 63 mins), Eniola Aluko (for Barr 63 mins), Lindsay Johnson (for Scott 69 mins), Rachel McArthur (for Chapman 75 mins), Sue Smith (for Yankey 75 mins).
