Gunners boss praises 'makeshift' striker - 5 Aug 2005 - Women's Football NewsArsenal manager Vic Akers paid tribute to Jayne Ludlow following her two goals against Charlton Athletic in the F.A.Women's Community Shield.

"Jayne made a big difference," he said. "She has a great enthusiasm for the game and that showed up tonight with two great goals.

"I couldn't believe the second one, a volley with both feet off the ground was great skill."

Akers added that he was delighted with the team's performance overall: "It was very pleasing, especially against Charlton - and the score was a fair reflection as well.

"We competed well in midfield all night and Rachel McArthur did okay overall on her debut. Lianne Sanderson is looking sharper and as the years go on she will get stronger."

The Arsenal boss warned his rivals that Arsenal are setting their sights on going one better than their two-trophy haul last season. "We're concentrating on the domestic scene and that is our main focus," he said. "We'll have a go in Europe and it would be nice to reach the UEFA Women's Cup Final but we want to win all three major trophies."
