Downend's double delight
 Women's Football News 7 May 2006

Downend Flyers rounded off a successful season when they completed the Gloucestershire County Women's League and Cup 'double' when they defeated Oldland Abbotonians 2-1 in the League Cup Final at Slimbridge.

Downend enjoyed the better of the first half but were unable to make the breakthrough until Aimee Taylor gave them the lead a minute before half time. Oldland's response was immediately and Jo Lenton levelled the scores going into the break.

The second half was more even with few chances at either end, and looked to be heading for extra time until Downend grabbed the winner four minutes from time. Laura Cornford's cross from the left picked out Debbie Stacey who swept home a left foot shot.

After the game, winning goalscorer Debbie Stacey said: "I knew (the cross) was going to go over Aimee Taylor's head and I had to hit it then. I thought it wasn't going in but it took the curl on the hard ground and went in the net. We took a long time to get the goal but it came eventually."

Downend captain Zoe Hodgson added: "We got what we deserved in the end, I think we made quite hard work of it. It was quite frustrating to concede straight after we scored, but we showed our character and lifted ourselves in the second half."
