Sue Wood feels that Birmingham City can challenge for a place in the top half of the National Division this season.

Speaking after their narrow 2-1 defeat to Bristol Academy on Sunday, the Birmingham City goalkeeper told Women's Soccer Scene: "We were unlucky that we didn't score with the number of chances that we had. We worked hard but just couldn't convert them, so we need to look at putting away our chances."

Sue is playing her first full season of top flight and is happy to be playing behind a strong defence. "It's great, because we are quite consistent with our back four," she says. "It's a big help having Laura Bassett there as she is commanding, Chelsea Weston and Michelle Archer are very consistent and whoever plays alongside 'Bass' is fine.

"I am trying to learn from every game and hopefully next year I'll be even stronger."

After last season's battle against relegation, Birmingham have spent most of this campaign in the top half and Sue wants to stay there. "We're looking for a top six finish and we need to keep going and work at it," she says. "It's important that we don't let this sort of match disappoint us.

"It's a bit more relaxed this year, the squad has pulled together and the team spirit is brilliant - you can see that when we play. We have two strikers in Amy McCann and Becky Hall who are both great finishers and great strikers of the ball, and I know that because I have to stand in goal in training! Precious Hamilton has done well and is very strong."

So far, Sue has the best goalkeeping record against Arsenal this season, having kept them down to three goals in their meeting. "Next time we play Arsenal, it will be on birthday so I'm looking for a clean sheet," she smiles.

17-year-old Sue is one of a number of youth products at Birmingham, several of whom are in and around the first team. "The youth system at Birmingham is excellent," she says. "With the likes of Maz Gauntlett and Chelsea Weston also breaking through, and two more on the bench, we've got some really good players there with more to come."
