Darlington RA v Whitley Bay

Darlington RA v Whitley Bay - 7 Oct 2007 - Women's Football NewsF.A.Women's Cup - Road to the Final
Whitley Bay have taken over the baton in our series in the North, ending the run of Team Northumbria when two goals from Laura Darmody gave them a 2-0 victory.

Whitley will be on their travels once again in the Third Round Qualifying in what could turn out to be one of the ties of the round. Darlington RA reached this stage by beating York City 3-1 and two rivals from last season are set to meet again.

Last season, Darlington RA and Whitley Bay were virtually neck and neck in a battle for the Division One North title in the North East League and it was Darlington who emerged as narrow victors, winning promotion to the Premier Division.

Darlington RA started life as Darlington Spraire Lasses in 1994 and moved under the wing of Darlington FC two years later. They won the Northern League and Cup 'double' in that year but Combination football proved a big jump and they were relegated the following season. The club moved again in 2002 to become part of the set up at Darlington Railway Athletic and success returned with the title last season. They have started well in the Premier Division and are unbeaten after four matches.

Alison White is the manager who has guided the club back up the pyramid and captain Natalie Wrangham is also the club's leading goalscorer. Other key players include Emma McIntosh, defender Sara Whyles, Lisa Thompson and Kerry Stephenson.

The match will be played at Darlington's Brinkburn Road ground and an excellent match is in prospect. Darlington have the higher status and the slight edge from last season, but Whitley have a superb Cup pedigree so this game should be too close to call.
