City halt Forest's charge
 Women's Football News 8 Oct 2007

City halt Forest's charge - 8 Oct 2007 - Women's Football NewsNorthern Division leaders Nottingham Forest's winning run was halted as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Manchester City.

After hitting the bar early on, City took the lead through a good finish from Laura Gligan but Forest fought back after the break and earned themselves a point when Beth Bailey scored with a cross-shot. Forest were dealt a blow late in the game as they lost full back Lauren Cresswell with a suspected ankle ligament injury.

Lincoln City narrowed the gap on Forest to a single point by defeating Stockport County 3-0. Two goals in four minutes from Jodie Snelson during the first half proved to be too much for County on the day and Megan Harris wrapped up the points from the penalty spot in the dying minutes. On Thursday night, Forest take on Lincoln in a top of the table clash at Dunkirk.

Preston North End suffered a setback as they were beaten 3-1 at home by improving Sheffield Wednesday. After Gemma Watson had put Preston ahead in the tenth minute, Lucy Foreman quickly equalised and Beth Gingell sent Wednesday in front on the half hour, before Sarah Smith made the game safe midway through the second half.

Aston Villa were another team to lose ground on the leaders with a 1-0 defeat away to Tranmere Rovers. Debbie Cartmel earned Tranmere the points with the only goal of the game, eight minutes from time.

Newcastle Utd are up into mid-table following their 3-1 victory over Rotherham Utd, who stay in the bottom two. Carey Gustafson marked her debut for Newcastle by heading them in front and Ruth Sutcliffe added the second a minute later. Suzanne Davies gave Rotherham hope by pulling a goal back but Melanie Reay rounded off the win with Newcastle's third goal.

Crewe Alexandra celebrated their first victory and points with a fine 1-0 success at Sunderland. Holly Newman scored the only goal of the game for Alex in the 52nd minute to end their run of six defeats.
