League leaders Bristol Academy gave Charlton Athletic an uncomfortable start with a 7-0 victory in the Addicks' opening match.
Stef Curtis put Academy ahead after two minutes and Kerry Bartlett doubled their lead before half time. Gwennan Harries scored early in the second half with Nicky Watts adding a double and strikes from Dani Ackerman and Bartlett completed the scoring.
The young Charlton side never gave up and battled to the end, epitomised by impressive striker Danielle Carlton, but the lack of games - this was Academy's eighth competitive match of the season - was a telling factor.
Blackburn Rovers moved into second place with a 4-2 victory over Watford. Karen Burke's second minute goal for Blackburn was quickly levelled by Helen Lander, with Natalie Preston putting Rovers back in front on half time. Katie Anderton added a third with Emma Beckett reducing the arrears for Watford, but Stacey Daniel wrapped up the win with a late goal.
Birmingham City ended their run of four defeats and almost claimed an excellent victory over Everton but were denied late on. Dani Bird gave the Blues the lead five minutes into the second half and they held on until the fourth minute of injury time, when Fara Williams fired home an equaliser from 25 yards.
Honours were even in the other game as Doncaster Rovers Belles began their league campaign by drawing 1-1 with Chelsea. Liz Hanson put the Belles in front shortly before half time with Chelsea fighting back to earn a point when Emma Whitter levelled with eight minutes remaining.
