Leeds kick off with derby win
 Women's Football News 12 Oct 2007

Leeds kick off with derby win - 12 Oct 2007 - Women's Football NewsLeeds Utd belatedly started their league season with a 3-1 local derby victory over Doncaster Rovers Belles on Thursday night.

An own goal from Vanessa Leat gave Leeds an 11th minute lead which was soon doubled by Katie Holtham (pictured) on her league debut. Sophie Hopper pulled a goal back for the Belles but Sue Smith completed the scoring with the third goal on the stroke of half time.

Watford closed in on second placed Blackburn Rovers with a 6-0 win away to Watford. Emma Beckett put Watford in front in the seventh minute before an own goal, Hayley Kemp and Beckett made it four by half time. Ashlee Hincks added a fifth on the hour and Helen Lander rounded off the victory with the final goal.

The top of the table clash in the Northern Division finished with honours even as Nottingham Forest and Lincoln City battled out a goalless draw, which keeps Forest one point clear of the Lady Imps.

Sunderland completed the 'double' over local rivals Newcastle Utd, coming from behind for a 2-1 win which takes them into the top half. Stacy Crooks gave Newcastle a tenth minute lead with Sarah Danby equalising and the in-form striker scored a late winner - her eighth goal of the season.

Crewe Alexandra continued their improving form but a fightback from Aston Villa denied them a second victory in a row. Lisa Harrison and Amanda Goodwin put Crewe two ahead inside the opening fifteen minutes, Stacey Arrowsmith pulled one back for Villa on the half hour and Abigail Cockayne scored a second half equaliser to secure a 2-2 draw.

In the Southern Division, Millwall Lionesses were unable to take an opportunity to replace Portsmouth at the top as they were beaten 2-1 at home by Crystal Palace. Beth Curtis gave Palace a first head lead, Kelly Campbell looked to have salvaged a point for Millwall but Curtis scored her second with three minutes remaining to give Palace the points.
