England ease past Belarus - 28 Oct 2007 - Women's Football NewsEngland 4 (A.Scott 11,64, K.Smith 33, Aluko 49)

England remain on maximum points in their UEFA Championship qualifying group after strolling to a comfortable victory over Belarus at the Banks's Stadium.

Captain Faye White was absent through injury, allowing Mary Phillip to return to the centre of defence alongside Anita Asante whilst Fara Williams was back in midfield after missing the World Cup quarter final through suspension.

It took eleven minutes for England to make the breakthrough, Eniola Aluko's cross was returned across goal by Fara Williams and Alex Scott, who had pushed forward from full back, was on hand to head the ball into the net.

Kelly Smith almost doubled the lead but her effort was well saved by Sviatlana Novikava and Katie Chapman headed the rebound just over.

Rachel Yankey volleyed just wide from Chapman's header but the game was effectively over as a contest shortly after the half hour mark as Scott's cross was headed firmly home by Kelly Smith for the second goal.

Sue Smith was introduced as a half time substitute and the one-sided pattern of the match continued. Within four minutes of the restart, Kelly Smith's shrewd pass put Aluko through on goal and she slid the ball past Novikava to put England three ahead.

The goal of the game came in the 64th minute. Substitute Lianne Sanderson exchanged passes with Aluko before her cross picked out Alex Scott who drilled home her eighth international goal.

The result keeps England in second place in Group One, a point behind the Czech Republic but with a game in hand.
