Leicester's award-winning victory
 Women's Football News 9 Jan 2008

Leicester's award-winning victory - 9 Jan 2008 - Women's Football NewsLeicester City WFC have been awarded the F.A.Women's Cup Third Round E.ON Team of the Round Award.

The club started out three years ago and since then, have gained three promotions, three League Cups and two County Cups.

Drawn against a strong outfit in Nottingham Forest (the leaders of the Premier League Northern Division), City upset the odds against their local rivals in a hard fought battle. Forest started the game brightly, but keeper Laura Niblett coped well in the early exchanges. The Foxes started the second half very well and took the lead through Zira Handley, after great work from Rachel Williams. For the rest of the game, the Foxes defence stood firm and managed to keep their concentration, resulting in a momentous day for Leicester.

The result means the Foxes made history in passing the Third Round for the first time in their history. Leicester are top of their league and, with a good Cup-run, the season is looking bright for the Foxes.
.
Leicester manager, Rehanne Skinner said: "As a club, we were obviously extremely happy to defeat Nottingham Forest in the Third Round of the FA Women's Cup after previously failing on two occasions in the same round. There were some exceptional performances from the players, in particular goalscorer Zira Handley had a fantastic game but the work rate of Remi Allen, Hannah Barrett and Lauren Impey was also key to the success in the end. I would like to thank E.ON for this opportunity to have the FA Women's Cup with us today and for giving us the chance to go to the FA Women's Cup Final in May."

The team will now be invited to The FA Women's Cup Final in May as well as being awarded kit for the club, courtesy of Cup sponsors E.ON.

Leicester continued their history making journey against Millwall Lionesses in the Fourth Round with a hard fought 1-0 win, thanks to a goal from Natasha Meade, and have been drawn against Everton in the Fifth Round.
