Widbrook Utd lifted the Hampshire FA Intermediate Cup after withstanding a second half comeback from New Forest in a pulsating 4-3 victory.
Despite a downpour in the minutes leading up to the kick off, the game got underway in bright sunshine. Both attacks looked lively and there were chances at both ends, before Widbrook took the lead on 28 minutes. Gemma Green latched onto a through ball from Jade Turner and carried the ball to the edge of the area and shot straight at Jess Churcher in the New Forest goal, who let the ball slip under her foot and into the goal. Widbrook's continued pressure resulted in a second minutes later through Laura Newsome.
Following a long stoppage due to an injury to Churcher, Green made it 3-0 in the second minute of injury time. Jade Turner provided Green with the ball on a plate right in front of goal, and the striker duly obliged, turning the ball home.
However New Forest grabbed themselves a lifeline moments later, Lanham sliding the ball home via the post.
Ten minutes after the restart, Widbrook were awarded a penalty for a foul on Green and Ashleigh Shuttleworth stepped up to restore their three-goal advantage.
New Forest hit back once again and Jess Frampton reduced the arrears with a well struck low shot into the corner. Frampton then set up a thrilling finish with a 25-yard lob for her second goal and pull it back to 4-3. New Forest inflicted late pressure but Widbrook held on for the victory.
