Dynamic Derby shock Leicester
 Women's Football News 16 May 2008

Derby County won the Midland Combination League Cup for the first time with a stunning 4-0 victory over League Champions Leicester City WFC in the Final at Whetstone.

Leicester went into the match as firm favourites and almost took the lead as Rachel Williams hit the woodwork but it was Derby who went ahead in the 20th minute when Emily Jeffery's sweetly struck 25-yard shot sailed past Laura Niblett and into the top corner.

Cara Newton could have added a second shortly afterwards when she shot wide from a good position but Leicester were unlucky not to level the scores shortly before half time as a deft lob from Natasha Meade came back off the post.

Eight minutes into the second half, Derby increased their lead as a Newton corner was not cleared by the Leicester defence and, following a huge goalmouth scramble, Sinead Morgan bundled the ball home for the second goal.

Driven on by talented midfield duo Rachel Williams and Remi Allen, Leicester tried hard to find a way back into the game but came up against a Derby defence in outstanding form. Derby goalkeeper Jenny Simpson also gave an impressive display and her handling was faultless when called upon.

Derby had looked dangerous from set pieces all night and another led to a killer goal with nine minutes remaining. Another pinpoint corner from Newton was met with a towering header from Lorna Abbey who climbed above Niblett to power the ball into the back of the net.

In the dying minutes, Derby rounded off the win with a fourth, Newton racing onto a through ball and beating the challenge of Jade Radburn before rounding Niblett to score a goal her performance merited.
