Gemma settles high scoring thriller
 Women's Football News 2 Sep 2008

Gemma settles high scoring thriller - 2 Sep 2008 - Women's Football NewsAn injury time winner decided a pulsating Premier League Cup Preliminary Round encounter as Portsmouth edged out Colchester Utd by the odd goal in eleven.

Six different players all found the net for Pompey in the 6-5 victory - Cassie Thorp, Lisa Langrish, Gemma Hillier, Leeta Rutherford, Lyndsey Crewe and Gemma Ritchie, who netted the decisive goal in the 92nd minute to earn her side a trip to West Ham Utd in the First Round. Spare a thought for Helen Bass who was on target four times for Colchester - the second time this season that she has scored at least a hat-trick in a game and still finished on the losing side.

Reading FC Women's debut in the competition ended in a 2-0 defeat at home to Barnet, a result that earns the Bees an away tie against National Division high fliers Chelsea.

Two early goals saw Preston North End on their way to a 2-1 win against Newcastle Utd and a home tie with Curzon Ashton. Sam Cadwallader and Louise Cafferkey put Preston two ahead in the opening ten minutes and despite Melanie Reay pulling a goal back, they held on for the victory.

Sunderland came from behind to run out 4-1 winners over Sheffield Wednesday to set up an intriguing First Round clash with OOH Lincoln. Wednesday took an early lead but the Black Cats hit back to progress, thanks to goals from Sarah Danby, Demi Stokes, Natalie Gutteridge and Steph O'Brien.
