Cheltenham Town v Newbury Ladies & Girls - 6 Sep 2008 - Women's Football NewsF.A.Women's Cup - Road to the Final
Our Southern tie sees a clash between South West League and Southern Region League clubs.

Cheltenham Town Ladies were formed in the 1980s and played in the South West League before becoming inaugural members of the South West Combination in 1998. Cheltenham were the first ever winners of the Gloucestershire County Women's Cup. They remained in the Combination for several years but relegation took them back into the Premier Division of the South West League, where they have remained ever since. Last season, they went close to returning to the level above when they finished as runners-up to Penzance.

Cheltenham's manager is Jane Legget, a former Scottish international who has been with the club for many years - firstly as a player and now as manager, a position she has held for the past three years. The side is captained by Cherie Rutherford and Rhona Donaldson undertakes the role of Secretary.

Newbury Ladies and Girls FC was renamed from AFC Newbury Ladies at the start of the 2007-08 season when the girls section of AFC Newbury Boys and Girls transferred to the club. The Ladies team was formed at the start of the 2003-04 season, joining the Berks & Bucks County League. In the next season, the league was renamed the Thames Valley League when joined by Oxfordshire. That season they completed the League and Cup 'double' and were promoted to Division One of the Southern Region League.

The next season, as happens, Newbury lost four influential players to university which weakened the squad somewhat and they just failed to gain promotion to the Premier Division the following season.

Last season, although short of numbers, the reserve team developed significantly and several players are now coming through to the first team. Newbury are optimistic of a better season than last year, where they again finished just outside the promotion places for a second season.

First team manager is Jack Harness, who is also Club Secretary, and the side is captained by Gemma Povey.
