Natalie extends Sunderland's lead
 Women's Football News 27 Oct 2008

Sunderland stretched their lead at the top to four points in the Northern Division following their 1-0 victory over Manchester City.

Natalie Gutteridge scored the only goal of the game, a 20-yard strike in the second minute, although the game could have produced more goals had it not been for excellent displays by the two goalkeepers, Sunderland's Helen Alderson and Andrea Worrall of City.

Newcastle Utd chalked up their sixth win in a row and are in second place after scoring six without reply away to Rotherham Utd. Melanie Reay got the ball rolling for Newcastle by scoring twice in the opening eight minutes and Stacy Crooks added a third before half time. After the break, Naomi Robson and Kelly Ridley both netted within a minute of each other and Rachel Furness completed the tally with fifteen minutes remaining.

Leicester City put a dent in Aston Villa's challenge by winning a closely contested battle 2-1. Remi Allen put Leicester ahead from the penalty spot with Kelly Clarke equalising ten minutes later, but it was Leicester who were to take the points as Courtney Sweetman-Kirk scored the winning goal, midway through the second half.

Reading FC Women are in mid-table after they defeated Curzon Ashton 4-2. Natasha Caswell's tenth minute strike was added to by Jen Osmond on the half hour, Joanne Power pulled a goal back for Curzon but Jo Chubb restored the advantage ahead of the interval. Danielle Puddefoot netted a fourth for Reading before Nicky Maylett scored a consolation for the Lancashire side.

The matches at Preston North End and Tranmere Rovers both fell victim to the weather.
