Narrow defeat for Scotland
 Women's Football News 20 May 2009

Narrow defeat for Scotland - 20 May 2009 - Women's Football NewsScotland Under-17 suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of Norway in their second game at the Four Nations Tournament.

They got off to the worst possible start, conceding a goal to a strong Norwegian side within five minutes. The Scottish defence had pushed a high line and were caught out by a long ball that Nina Thorne latched onto and put away. Ten minutes later, Norway doubled their lead as Ane Holmlund's strike from outside the box found its way past an unlucky Hannah Reid in goal.

However Scotland played their way back into the game and in the second half they created as many chances as their opponents. Centre half Eilish McSorley crashed home a header from a corner to pull one back for the Scots on 80 minutes but as hard as they tried, an equaliser just didn't come their way.

Manager Ann-Helen Grahm was positive about her squad's performances over the weekend. "We took a really young squad out to Denmark and we matched our opponents really well, and the girls must take confidence from the fact they can challenge at this level now," she told www.scottishfa.co.uk.

"In this game we knew the Norwegian side liked to play the long ball but unfortunately we still got caught out early on. We were unlucky with their second goal, but I felt we kept possession of the ball much better than we did against this side last year.

"We were solid defensively once we got to grips with dropping off at the right times and reading the play and I was particularly impressed by our attacking play. The Norwegians play 4-3-3 but we kept our width well and exploited the space down both sides.

"Unfortunately the result just didn't go our way but we got a well deserved goal at least.
"But over all i felt the girls did remarkably well against sides whose players are all playing at senior level in their countries."

Scotland under-17: Hannah Reid, Aimee Godfrey (sub Kelly Clark 60mins), Susan Hamilton (sub Claire Thoms 41mins), Eilish McSorley, Chloe Craig, Sarah Robertson (sub Mairead Fulton 65mins), Rebecca Storrie, Siobhan Hunter, Lana Clelland, Emily Thomson, Lucy Clark (sub Louise Mason 60mins). Subs not used: Lauren Sangster, Heather Richards.
