Good Evans! Gemma seals United success
 Women's Football News 20 May 2009

Good Evans! Gemma seals United success - 20 May 2009 - Women's Football NewsSheffield United Community lifted the Joe Hobin League Cup for teams in the North East League when they beat Blyth Spartans 2-0 on the sloping Brewery Field at Spennymoor last Sunday.

Having drawn twice with Blyth in their league encounters earlier in 2009, the all-Premier Division final was seemingly destined for extra time as United, despite enjoying the better of play, could not find a decisive finish.

Then with 80 seconds remaining Rachel Mariam crossed from the left and Gemma Evans, who was wide from a good opening a few minutes earlier, rose to send a header over Blyth keeper Sheryl Chappell and into the roof of the net.

Barely had the dust settled than Evans broke from just inside the Blyth half and despite attempts by two defenders put the issue beyond doubt with a strike from 25 yards.

So, Evans ended up as the star of the show, but early in the first half it was stars of another kind she was seeing following a clash of head with Mariam, but fortunately for her and United she was able to continue and bring an eventful season for her club to a successful conclusion.

The north east proved a happy hunting ground for United who won at champions Darlington and also Whitley Bay in the league as well as knocking both out on their way to the final.

A memorable match for United was enhanced by a referee who clearly enjoyed the 90 minutes just a few weeks short of his 68th birthday. For, the man in the middle was none other than George Courtney MBE who includes the 1986 World Cup third place play-off game and 1980 FA Cup Final among his many big matches.
